Roses & LeavesIn the enlarged carving shown on the top right of this image it is easy to see how the entire carving was frosted by airbrush. After that, sunken portions of a carving were given some additional ink from the same airbrush. When the ink dried, highlights were scratched onto the high points of the leaves and petals by lightly dragging a broad-blade stylus with microscopic teeth notched into it. Both the fine point stylus and the broad stylus were handmade from dental drill bits. Design Mart traces its roots back to 1920s when John Fernandez left Franco's dictatorship in Spain and arrived in Cuba. Soon after that, he took another voyage up the east coast and settled in Barre, Vermont where he worked in a growing granite industry.

The mid 1970s saw a revolution in the pre-cutting of rubber sandblast stencil for carving and lettering on monuments. Sandblast masks made of heavy rubber had long been used to sandblast lettering, panels and flowers on monuments.

Although there are French Colonial, Dutch Colonial, and other Colonial styles inspired by the domestic architecture prevalent amongst those nations, American Colonial refers to the sub-set based on British homes of the pre-Civil War period. The suburbanization of Los Angeles characterizes the postwar period's prosperity (from 1945 to the recession of 1973). These styles were relatively inexpensive to construct, and their simplicity and utility met the needs of the burgeoning middle class. A COS is typically sent out by the county assessor to the transferee when a PCOR is either not filed or is incomplete at the time the transfer is recorded. The county assessor may also send a COS to transferees of unique or specialized-type properties when they change ownership.
Front-facing gables sometimes incorporate a catslide roof, where a curving interior slope contrasts with steep, straight eaves on the outside. There are often mock-retro touches such as imitation thatched roofs and windows with leaded panes. One of the oldest looking styles in American domestic architecture, cottage homes developed out of the Craftsman style, inspired by the village architecture of Old Europe, particularly England. Victorian is something of a catch-all term for a number of styles, including Gothic Revival, Italianate, Second Empire, Romanesque, Stick Style, and Folk-Victorian, amongst others.
